The gateway to Mecklenburg County, South Hill is a charming small town located off 1-85 just half an hour from Richmond. If you love a quaint, close-knit community, South Hill is for you! And though small, there’s always something fun going on.
History of South Hill
South Hill has always been known for its tobacco industry (check out the Tobacco Farm Life Museum to learn more about its agricultural roots!). The town is still the third-biggest market in the state, but growth in manufacturing has diversified its economy. Fun fact: South Hill is exactly halfway between the Atlantic Ocean on the east and the Blue Ridge Mountains on the west, and it’s aptly named for being just south of a “little mountain.”
Wilson’s BBQ

Come for the barbecue and stay for the pies (or take one home!) at this down-home ‘cue joint known for its rotating menu of traditional offerings like baby back ribs, catfish, fried chicken, and bbq (naturally).
The Colonial Center for Performing Arts

Listed in the Natural Register for Historic Places, The Colonial Center for Performing Arts is one of the few remaining vaudeville theatres in Virginia. Originally constructed in 1925, the theater has hosted such performers as Joan Crawford, Lois Homer, Tex Ritter, Gene Autry and Champ, and more. It now plays host to several shows throughout the year.
313 Franklin Cocktails & Kitchen

South Hill’s trendiest restaurant and bar, 313 Franklin is known for its delicious lunch, dinner, and brunch dishes that combine both old and new world cuisine, in addition to craft cocktails, local beers, and Virginia wines. Local favorites include the fried green tomato BLT, the housemade chicken salad, and the steak and cheese sub.
