Lake Gaston
Roanoke Rapids Lake is located right below Lake Gaston which borders the counties of Mecklenburg and Brunswick in Virginia and Warren, Halifax and Northampton in North Carolina. Lake Gaston has over 20,000 acres of “high quality” water, 34 miles long, and approximately one and one half miles wide at the lower end of the lake. It also has over 350 miles of shoreline.
For the fisherman, Lake Gaston is well stocked with game fish which include striped bass or rockfish, largemouth bass, crappie, sunfish, and several varieties of catfish.
If water sports are more your speed, there are lots of places for motor boating, sailing, tubing, water skiing, waterboarding, and jet skiing. If you call Roanoke Rapids home, there are plenty of public boat ramps and marinas along the shoreline, that offer gas and supplies as well as lakeside dining.
Roanoke River & Roanoke Rapids Lake
The Roanoke River is not only a spot for fun, but it is also a source of hydroelectric power and irrigation for agricultural lands. Roanoke Rapids Lake is the last place where the river is impounded, with the rest of the way uninterrupted before it empties into the Atlantic.
Because of this, residents and visitors of Roanoke Rapids get to enjoy the deeper waters of the lake and the shallower segments of the river. The water is great for fishing, whitewater rafting, and kayaking.
